Semi Auto Bren Tutorial 2
The reweld process will differ somewhat depending on how your receiver
is cut. I will be working on 2 kits that are cut differently, you can apply the
technique that best suits your needs. The first step is to remove all the parts
and clean and degrease them. Now the receiver sections can be prepped by
removing all the slag from the inside and out side and removing all the burnt
metal from the edges of the cuts.
This is a kit I got off of Gunbroker. it is cut through the gas tube, barrel
locking nut area, the center of the magwell and in the rear. I have ordered a
second kit from Military Gun Supply and will use sections of the receiver
for fillers, as well as using the intact gas tube as shown is the second photo.
Repairing the cut gas tube will require a brass or copper mandrel fitted
inside the tube and an external jig to clamp it firmly in the proper position.
Since the metal in this area is thick, the cut is fairly wide. There are several
ways to approach this repair. First is to fill it with weld, another is to cut the
ends square and make a steel filler block to close the gap.
I decided to start reconstructing the rear section while I am waiting for
the extra kit to arrive. I set all the parts on the lower and determined their
proper position. Then I scribed 2 lines 5/16" apart on the 2 sections.
Next I clamped the 2 sections in the jig and used the scribed lines for a
reference to space the parts properly. I am using a short jig for this build,
as I like to construct a section at a time. It makes final fitting up easier in the
end.
I mounted the receiver in the mill and cut a 5/16" slot between the
reference lines to remove the cut ends.
