FAL L1A1 Build 3
I got the wood back from my friend, the Wizard of Wood, JJGlith, He
worked his magic on it and got it looking pretty decent. Installing the stock
is easy with the recoil spring tool. Put the spring and nut on the tool and
insert it into the recoil tube and tighten the nut.
Remove the tool, install the stock screws and butt plate. The lower is
done and ready to install on the upper.
Barrel installation and headspacing.
The threads on the barrel for inch and metric are 1" x 16 TPI. If the
barrel does not screw into the receiver easily the threads will need to be
chased with a die. You can get a die from Victor Machinery Exchange for
about $28.00. It is not good to force the barrel into the receiver, it can
seize and damage the threads.
Screw the barrel all the way into the receiver, it will probably not index
correctly. You will need to remove material from the barrel face to get it to
index correctly. Since the thread pitch is 16 threads per inch, the barrel will
advance .0625" per revolution. In this case the barrel is a little over 1/2
turn from indexing, so about .030" will need to be removed from the barrel
face for it to index properly. A small amount of material can be removed
with a file, this much will need to be done in a lathe.
