MG 42 Receiver Tutorial 13
After tacking the bushing in place check the fit by installing and removing the barrel,
with the barrel installed push down on the barrel bushing. The barrel should slide back and
forward freely. If it does weld up the booster bushing.
Take your time and get a good deep penetrating weld all the way around. If you do a
neat job it won't need grinding.
Now we can cut the recoil spring and test the work so far. You will need to remove
enough coils so that the ejector ring will contact the buffer and push it all the way forward.
Install the spring on the buffer and compress it with the bolt extension. There will be about
a 1" gap that equates to about 8 coils. It is best to remove a couple less and keep
checking it to not remove any more than necessary.
It is a good idea to invest in a new recoil spring they are available for about $10.00 and
can save a lot of headaches later if the one that came with the kit is weak.
Seat the spring in the bolt extension and install the bolt, barrel, spring and buffer. The
barrel should go in and the barrel door should latch up tight, retract the bolt and let it slam
shut. if all is free and operates correctly you can finish welding the shroud to the receiver.

Finish the welds in sections, take your time, good welds won't need much grinding. I
added a filler piece to the receiver to fill in the raised portion of the shroud. Be sure to get
100% penetration on the welds for maximum strength.
